20250804812As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen the culture of safety in laboratories, the College of Science organized a workshop titled “Risk Assessment Using Job Safety Analysis (JSA)”, delivered by Ms. Badriyah Al-Shaya and hosted by the Volunteer and Community Service Unit.
The workshop targeted members of the wider community and aimed to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to apply Job Safety Analysis effectively in the workplace.
The workshop addressed several key topics including the difference between hazards and risks, an overview of risk management and its importance in protecting people, preserving property, and sustaining academic and research activities. Participants explored the main elements of risk management, including identifying risks, assessing them, and implementing corrective and preventive actions.
The workshop also highlighted the negative consequences of ignoring risks in research projects—both on researchers themselves and on the quality of scientific outcomes.
A major focus of the workshop was the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) method, introduced as a vital tool for identifying hazards in each step of a task, evaluating their severity, and setting up appropriate control measures. Participants learned how to apply JSA—from selecting a task and breaking it down into detailed steps to identifying potential hazards and establishing safety procedures and training.
Among the key outcomes of the workshop were:
Empowering participants to conduct comprehensive job risk analyses,
Developing effective emergency response plans, and
Applying international safety standards in their work environments.
The session concluded with an important message: Job Safety Analysis is not merely a tool for improving procedures—it is the foundation for building a complete culture of safety. Safety is a continuous journey that requires ongoing development, teamwork, and personal commitment to ensure a secure and productive research environment that drives scientific excellence.
