In a series of scientific lectures in the Faculty of Engineering, department of Civil Engineering and Environmental has established a science lecture entitled "The impact of climate changes on water resources in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the ways to adapt to them". The lecture has been delivered by Prof. Hassan Ibrahim, Coordinator of the Department, in the Lecture Hall of the Quality Centre in the College on Wednesday (17-1-1435 H). The lecture was attended by members of the teaching staff in the Department of Civil Engineering and Environmental.
Dr. Hassan Ibrahim presented in his lecture an introduction about the climatic changes in all the countries of the world in general and in the countries of the Arab Gulf in particular, and the clear impact of these changes on all sources of water, agriculture, and food sources as well. Then he displayed photos for a variety of weather maps that show the current climatic effects on the Arab Gulf region such as sandstorms, which lead to the destruction of roads, bridges, and installations as well, in addition to the emission of toxic gases harmful to the environment, where the proportion of emission of gases as a result of global warming in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is considered as the highest level among the Arab States.
Then Dr. Hassan Ibrahim, displayed a number of climatic maps showing the climatic changes, which will come to the Arab Gulf region in the next coming decades, followed by a detailed description of four possible plans expecting the percentage of toxic gas emission during the coming hundred years, and the changes that will occur on the surface of the earth and the arctic regions, as well as the seas and oceans during that period, and the way of dealing with each one of them to mitigate their impact on the surface of the earth, water, and food as well, in addition to the precautions and procedures to be followed since now to mitigate the effects, such as the application of the principle of (Rainwater Harvesting) over facilities, homes, and provide water used in agriculture, and reinjection and feed the wells of groundwater with rain water to continue their viability. At the end of the lecture, the attendance expressed their appreciation for the great scientific benefit obtained from this lecture, then some questions were raised where the presenter elucidated and answered all the questions and inquiries.
