With the participation of one of the faculty members at the College of Medicine, MU, a successful advanced surgery was performed for a 28-year-old patient at King Khalid Hospital in Majmaah.
The patient suffered a Shortness of the left limb and a bony deformity at the bottom of the thigh bone which caused her a chronic pain in the right limb.
The surgery was performed successfully under the supervision of Dr. Abdelmalik al-Biker, faculty member at College of Medicine, MU, Dr. Hamzah al-Rebei, faculty member at College of Medicine, Saud University, and Dr. Mohammed Saeed, Orthopedic Specialist at King Khalid Hospital.
As the first surgery to be carried out at non-specialized hospital, Dr. al-Biker explained that the patient’s short and deformed bone were corrected using Ilizarov Apparatus, which is a type of externa fixation used in orthopedic surgery to lengthen or reshape limb bones.
Dr. al-Biker extended his thanks to the medical team at the hospital and its director, Dr. Khalid al-Ghatani for their support to make this achievement possible.
Special thanks were also extended to MU rector, Dr. Khalid al-Muqren for his concern to coordinate with sectors in all fields.
Such rare surgeries of bony deformity and lengthening limbs are usually carried out at specialized centers.
