Dept. Features & Labs

Main  Features of the department:

The Department of Medical Laboratories , a department of the College of Science in Zulfi, includes various different majors :

• Clinical Biochemistry : It aims to provide clinical diagnosis and diagnostic tests for various diseases in addition to the analysis of various body fluids.

• Medical Microbiology: It aims to recognize and distinguish between various micro-organisms and to identify the pathogen through the various pigments and biochemical reactions.

• Immunology and Serology: It aims to study the clinical and pathological situations resulting from an imbalance in the immune system and the cases associated with the removal of organs. It also aims to study the laboratory applications in the field of immunology and vaccines to assess the efficiency of the patient's immune system and the various vaccines.

• Histology: It aims to study the microscopic shapes and characteristics of all tissues and organs of the human body through examining sectors of human organs and tissues via the optical microscope. It also aims to study the composition and methods of cell division.

• Histotechnology: It aims to define the appropriate methods of receiving, registering and examining tissue samples and how to select the morbid parts. It also explains the methods of tissue fixation, keeping samples in paraffin,  and how to cut and dye the samples with complete knowledge of the different types of pigment.

• Histopathology: It aims to introduce students to the concept of disease and the link between diseases and virtual and microscopic changes that result from these diseases. It also aims to provide microscopic description of the changes to the common diseases and tumors that affect the organs of the body.

• Blood disease & molecular pathology It aims to identify the molecular changes that occur in the cell as a result of various pathological changes and find out the most important means of molecular biology in the modern diagnosis of diseases and tumors such as image analysis and  immune rejection.

• Health & Ambulance Care: It aims to introduce students to  the health care system and to the cases of critical illness and how to deal with such cases via diagnosis and providing first aids.

• Pathophysiology:  It aims to identify the diseases that affect different organs with the link between physiological functions and pathological changes.

The department has a range of laboratories in addition to the  cooperation with Al Zulfi General Hospital in preparing the students who visit the hospital by watching the cases of disease, follow-up analysis of the various devices, and watching medical tests there, and the laboratories in our college are:

• Histology and Histotechnology Lab: It contains various samples of some tissues with the necessary slides for the study of form and qualities of the microstructure of all human tissues and organs by examining them via the optical microscope. The students will be also trained  to use the appropriate methods of receiving, registering and examining tissue samples and how to select the morbid parts. The students will learn the different methods of tissue fixation, keeping samples in paraffin,  and how to cut and dye the samples with complete knowledge of the different types of pigment.

• Histopathology Lab: Students study various forms of some morbid tissues with the necessary slides for the study via the optical microscope. Students also  learns to link between diseases and virtual and microscopic changes that result from these diseases. They also learn to provide microscopic description of the changes to the common diseases and tumors that affect the organs of the body.

• Anatomy Lab: Students study the anatomical configuration of the human body using various samples for all organs of the body.

• General, Organic and Analytical Chemistry Lab: Students learn to identify chemical compounds and how to analyze them descriptively and quantitatively.  They also learn to make  some organic chemical reactions and to identify effective groups.

• Biochemistry Lab: Students make different analyses of blood and body fluids and learn to estimate the different levels of biological compounds such as fat, cholesterol, sugar, uric acid, and vitamins in addition to heart and liver enzymes etc.

• Molecular Biology, Physiology and Hematology Lab: Students study the human body and the  different functions of its organs in addition to its cellular and functional composition. Also, they learn to take, test and store blood samples.  They learn the act of blood transfusion for patients as well as identifying blood groups and inheritance. During the study, students acquire the skills of diagnosis of blood diseases and how to organize and participate in blood donation campaigns and management of blood banks. At the end of study students have mastered the use of all modern equipment and advanced techniques in various medical fields, especially molecular diagnosis of genetic diseases and understand the analysis results.

• Microbiology Lab: Students learn how to collect samples properly and store them correctly. They also learn to use the optical microscope to examine slides of different microbes, such as bacteria, fungi and parasites and they learn to grow and test bacteria and fungi using incubator. They also train to use the autoclaves.
