This course aims at teaching the general principles of paragraph and essay writing.  This includes brainstorming, the topic sentence, the supporting sentences, the introduction and the supporting paragraphs, respectively, as well as the conclusion. Special attention is given to making proper lexical choices and minimizing mother-language interference.

Grammar

Course Overview 

This course introduces students to the basic principles of English Grammar within both the simple and compound sentence frameworks.  This is carried out by teaching them the main parts of speech, the simple tense forms, the modals, the comparative/superlative forms, the possessive case (pronouns, adjectives, possessive “’s”), the noun forms and time expressions.  Learning is reinforced through oral and written drills.

Reading

Course Description

This course teaches the basic reading skills in English.  The reading texts are carefully selected and they represent different discourse types. The course also provides the students with a large amount of EFL vocabulary and lays particular emphasis on skimming in an attempt to make the students avoid the word-by-word reading technique. It also trains the students on making inferences and summarizing the general ideas included in the reading comprehension.
