The course introduces students to some basic issues in applied linguistics that pertain to second language learning and teaching.  Topics will include:

a. A definition of the term and its relation to other disciplines.

b. A brief discussion of language learning theories.

c. Factors affecting second language learning, age factors, personality factors, socio-cultural factors in ESL learning.

d. Learning strategies.

e. Communicative competence

f. Learner language

Course Description

This course is an introduction to speech theory from a rhetorical standpoint (i.e. the use of language to achieve specific ends or produce material effects at particular social contexts). Students will study the major principles and strategies of classical and modern rhetoric, and some of its contemporary applications and implications, focusing on the spoken aspect of rhetoric rather than the written.  They will also practice listening to, analyzing, and delivering speeches on certain topics and issues.

Appreciating Poetry

 

 

Cours Description

This poetry course is primarily designed to train students to define poetry as a specific literary genre and distinguish it from other literary genres. Paraphrase and summarize a poem in order to understand its meaning.  Analyze imagery and figurative language as elements of poetry.

Write an analysis of a poem in Standard English.
