Department of Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering is the branch of engineering concerned with the design, manufacturing, installation, and operation of engines and machinery. It is a broad specialization that has to do with all areas of life. Mechanical engineering is used, for example, in the space industry, aviation, in production, energy conversion, the mechanics of the buildings, transportation, and in the modeling and simulation information.
Mechanical engineering gained momentum as a result of the principle of trial and error and practice by specialized engineers using scientific methods in research, design, and production. The constant demand for efficiency was the cause of the increasing rise in the quality of work required from the mechanical engineer, which requires a high degree of education and skill.
Mechanical engineering degrees are awarded by many universities around the world, and the system of study in Mechanical Engineering is usually from four to five years and grant Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Technology, Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Applied Engineering at the end of the study.
The mechanical engineer should be aware of and able to deal with the basic rules of chemistry, electrical engineering and physics. Most of the studies of mechanical engineering include the study of mathematics and advanced mathematics, especially differential, partial and linear equations.
Mechanical Engineering Functions
There are four duties for the mechanical engineer, which are common in all branches of mechanical engineering:
- The first duty is to understand and recognize the fundamental principles of Mechanical Sciences, which include the dynamics (the relationship between forces and motion, such as vibrations, automatic control), and thermodynamics (dealing with relations between different forms of heat, energy, power, and the flow of fluids, lubrication, and the properties of materials).
- The second duty is a series of research, design and development, through which the necessary changes are made to meet the needs of the present and the future. This work requires a clear understanding of Mechanical Sciences , an ability to analyze complex systems to simple elements and innovation in copyright and invention.
- The third duty is the production of products, including planning, operation and maintenance. The goal behind this is to produce the highest value at the lowest cost and the lowest employment of funds, while maintaining or enhancing the sustainability or the position of the company.
- The fourth important duty of the mechanical engineer includes management and marketing, in some cases.
Areas of work available to the graduate of the Department of Mechanical Engineering
There is a great need in the local, regional and global job markets for qualified mechanical engineers able to meet the renewable challenges in the duties of mechanical engineers.
There are wide areas of work available for graduates of mechanical engineering where they can work:
- In consultancy offices and construction companies in the field of designing and supervising mechanical services for buildings such as heating and air conditioning and cooling systems, sewer and firefighting.
- In the field of engineering trade companies which import and sell materials and equipment required for the projects listed above.
- In power stations.
- In factories to maintain and operate machinery, both in the civilian or the military sectors.
- In the areas of renewable energy and to use it in domestic chores and institutions for warming and water heating.
- In the offices of design and industrial and engineering supervision specialized in the design of production lines and oversee the installation and operation.
- In the field of engineering education, development and innovation besides following-up and developing the society requirements.
The need for mechanical engineering is endless as long as there is development in human life. All developments in the field of applied and engineering sciences are important as they depend on the Mechanical Engineering. No device or machine can come into existence or be useful to the benefit of mankind without passing through the field of Mechanical Engineering that designs it and calculates the possibility of endurance of influential external forces as well as its efficiency and longevity. Devices, machinery and tools are not presented for use unless they are proven in terms of mechanical aspect.
