20250804812The Volunteer and Community Service Unit in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry, organized a workshop titled “Preparing Reagents for Organic Chemistry Experiments for Science Majors.”
The workshop was delivered by Dr. Manahil Al-Amin and targeted laboratory technicians and students in scientific disciplines to enhance their practical skills and improve their proficiency in preparing chemical reagents based on accurate scientific principles.
The participants were introduced to the fundamentals of measurement and chemical calculations required for solution preparation. Methods for calculating molar and percentage concentrations were explained, along with simplified conversion techniques supported by practical examples.
The workshop also covered the correct procedures for preparing standard solutions and addressed common errors that may affect the accuracy of laboratory results.
The participants were also introduced to practical demonstrations and instructional videos that outlined the preparation of several reagents used in organic chemistry experiments. The session also explained qualitative reagents used to identify functional groups such as unsaturation, alcohols, carbonyl compounds, acids, and amines, while highlighting the expected visual changes for each test.
The workshop concluded with Q&A session.
