Academic advising is a key to success for growth and global stand of any higher educational institution. At the faculty of Department of Nursing , College of Applied Medical Sciences (CAMS), Majmaah University, AlMajmaah, academic advisers are treated as valuable assets to student’s community as they plan their undergraduate career and, finally, prepare for graduation to meet the demands of the market industry. Academic advising is a legitimate process that stands for guiding the students / Advisee on different issues related to their academic advancement and to help them find solutions to different academic problems. Academic advising is related to assisting students with educational decision, degree requirements, academic policies/ procedures, as well as broader concerns such as career and graduate institutional options in the Major.

Academic advising synthesizes and investigate students' educational experiences within the structure of their ambitions, abilities and lives to extend learning beyond campus boundaries and time frames. This Academic advising system is based on Four Stakeholders involved in the process of Academic advising at the Faculty of Department of Nursing , College of Applied Medical Sciences, Majmaah University are:

1) The Advisee / Students.

2) The advisor / Counsellor (faculty member Played as Academic Advisor or Career Advisor).

3) The Head of the Academic Advising Unit/Committee.

4) And the Department counsel / Program.

 

Role of the Academic Advisor and Advisee / Student:

An Academic Advisor is a faculty member of the Department for the process of guiding the students / Advisee on various affairs related to their current academic and future progress. Following are some of the responsibilities designate for the Academic Advisor:

(1) Advising the undergraduate students regarding curriculum study plan relevant to the Program at the faculty of Department of Nursing .

(2) Analyze, view and sign the check sheet after each semester to examine the progress of a student.

(3) Arrange, administer and announce open days on an annual basis.

(4) Direct student orientation and advising services.

(5) Coordinated internship and abroad study (Career advising).

(6) Welcomes and Manages the student transfer system (inter departmental or international).

(7) Monitoring the student absenteeism percentage to prevent semester detention.

(8) Advisor administer the online feedback system for various outcomes of the program, course and other services on time by utilizing the electronic Edugate system.

(9) Advisors also providesinformation and guidance to outgoing studentsto seek an interview at reputed hospitals for Internship training.

The advisee / Student has the responsibility to:

(1) Admit that advising is a shared responsibility and accept final responsibility for all decisions.

 (2) Analyze personal values, abilities and goals.

3) Assemble for pre-planned advising sessions and bring relevant materials when contacting the advisor.

(4) Contact and make appointment with the advisor when required or when in need of assistance.

(5) Become knowledgeable about policies, procedures and requirements, i.e. add/drop policies and deadlines, graduation and general education policies.

The academic guidance service is essential in assisting students in achieving the goals of the university. The university encourages students to use utilize their talents to grow academically, psychologically, socially and morally. It also aims at preparing the students in accordance with their academic aspirations, potentials and societal values. The academic guidance is a key activity within the university to discover students’ inclinations and potentials. It also determines students’ goals and helps them plan their future in accordance with their talents. Accordingly, the students will grasp the skills necessary for their prospective future careers. There is no doubt; the philosophy of the academic guidance emerges from its objectives. Firstly, academic guidance aims to present the university's academic programs, rules and regulations inside the campus and the social and sportive atmosphere to the students. Secondly, it explores the academic aspirations of the students and their potentials and provides them with the opportunity to benefit from the experience of the faculty staff members. Thirdly, it helps the students solve problems in a methodical and logical manner. Lastly, it provides the students with the information and skills necessary to achieve their prospective career goals and helps to enhance the talents they possess. The academic guidance looks forward to positive changes in the student's attitude toward the cultural, social and vocational values of his society. It also helps the student to discover his needs and enable him to make his own decisions in relation to choosing the suitable field of study. Students will be capable of overcoming the difficulties facing them during their studies The good relationship resulting from continuous interaction between the students and their academic guides helps them to adapt and benefit from the environment of the university in a methodical, social, vocational, sportive and ethical manner. This relationship increases the loyalty of the students to their awareness institutions.

The institutions of higher education mostly rely on the experience of their staff members in guiding the students in academic issues such as: choosing the suitable field, providing the students with suggestions and advice that will improve their academic performance. In addition, the institutions of higher education helps the students in choosing the suitable courses, informing students about the changes in the requirements and the academic regulations as well as assisting the students in solving their academic and administrative problems. Finally, they explore the students’ potentials and skills to enhance individual creativity.

Plan of the Academic Guidance in Semester:

Characteristics of the Plan

Firsty: The Nature of the Plan

It is a range of activities and events taken by the Academic Counsellor in the first semester in the college building. The activities include initiating the students to their study and scio-cultral programmes in the college, identifying different types of problem cases and carrying out follow-ups at suitable intervals till the end of the semester. The role of an Academic Counsellor is to activate these activities in coordination with the Academic Guidance Unit and all the concerned parties in order to integrate the students in their academic environment.

Secondly: The Objectives Of the plan

The objectives of the plan are based on the following:

(1) Disseminate and promote the culture of the Academic Guidance of the students and provide the service to those who are in need but not asked for.

(2) Discover and support the unsurpassed students.

(3) Help students to find direct solutions concerning the academic problems that they face.

(4) Provide an opportunity for students to take direct and indirect advantages from the experiences of the faculty staff outside the classrooms.

(5) Planning therapeutic activities to meet the poor compatibility and achievement of some students.

(6) Provide necessary counseling and guidance to modify the undisciplined behavior of the students.

(7) Help students to integrate into and adapt to the academic and educational environment of the college.

(8) Motivate outstanding students academically and practically.

(9) Take advantage of the talents of students that have been discovered and help them to do their best through the guidance to the activities of the Student Affairs.

Thirdly: Awareness of the Plan

The Office of Guidance and Counselling in the College takes a series of actions to inform the plan as the following:

(1) Prepare the directory of the Academic Guidance and Counselling and distribute it to the fresh students at the beginning of the academic semester.

(2) Display the plan on College Notice Boards for comments, certification and approval of it.

(3) Distribute the fresh students to the faculty staff and keep the Alumni with their own counsellors at the beginning of the academic semester.

(4) Post the plan on the College Web Site for wider circulation and availability.

Fourthly: Functions of the Academic Counsellor for the Purposes of Applying the Plan

  1. Prepare the student's file - the Academic Counsellor prepares a special file for each student of the students who have been assigned to him. The file contains the following:

· The Student Information Form.

· List of the academic specialty courses that lead to the student's graduation.

· The Registration Form if possible.

 · Latest position of the student's academic status.

· Other administrative documents ... etc.

  1. General Guidance for the Student

Guide the student to the one who can respond to his inquiries. Timetable: The Counsellor makes sure that students know the time and place of lectures, notices and suggests of discrepancies, if any, the student's timetable. The absence of the student: Monitoring the students' absence is one of the tasks of the course professor, and the Academic Counsellor has to follow-up the cases referred to him by the Office of Guidance and Counselling according to the plan.

  1. Performance Evaluation

The Academic Counselor has to monitor the students' quarterly and Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA), so that whose Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is under the Academic Warning can be guided to raise his Cumulative Graduate Point Average (CGPA) to come out from that Warning status. The Academic Counsellor has to explain to the student that the Academic Warning is not a kind of punishment or disciplinary action, but it enables the student to continue with reduced burden of study to help him improve his performance. These students have to finish the specialty within an acceptable and reasonable level which is more important than the rapid completion of the program with low performance, and which may expose them to be dismissed if they fail to do so.

  1. Discover and support the unsurpassed students

The Counselor reviews the quarterly results of the tests and the end of the semester to identify the failure students (who have obtained less than 60%). Do personal interview with all these students to get acquainted with their problems, from their point of view, and write a report about that. In case of identifying the reason of their incapability, the issue is submitted to the Office of Guidance and Counselling for support and follow-up to resolve the problem until the student's achievement performance improve can raise their scores. The Counselor writes, in a file, the names of these students, the nature of the problem and the extent of the student's achievement. The Office of Guidance and Counselor works on following-up the unsuccessful students according to the relevant department.

  1. Take care of the outstanding students

The Academic Counselor, in cooperation with the Office of the Counselling Guidance and the Management of the College, works on designation and implementation of a program to take care of the outstanding students which aim to:

· Upgrade the capacity of the students, culturally and intellectually and thereby help them develop their talents.

· Create a spirit of fair competition among the students.

 Fifthly: Activities and Events in the Plan

It is expected that the plan covers the following activities and events:

· Arrange periodic meetings with the students to communicate with them on a personal level to discuss the problems and issues they face

· Establish Electronic communication with students whenever possible to discuss all the difficulties they face in their studies.

· Involve students in seminars and workshops organized by the College "or other Colleges whenever possible" to facilitate the personal and social interaction and thus help them integrate in the academic environment of the College life.

· Involve students in various activities in the College.

Under the patronage of the President of the University, Prof. Saleh bin Abdullah Al-Mizil, the University Vice Presidency for Female Student Affairs held a package of workshops specialized in developing and refining entrepreneurial skills to enhance the pioneering and strategic role of women at the university during the second semester of the year 1444 AH. Within the initiative (Saudi Civilized Women)

The workshops were presented over a period of two weeks and received a distinguished attendance of (215) university employees, and the Vice President for Female Student Affairs opened the package concerned with the importance of the pioneering role of Saudi women during the era of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz, may God protect him, and the importance of acquiring entrepreneurial skills in accordance with the ambitious vision of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia 2030, and the activities began with a workshop entitled (Pioneering Leadership Transformation and Change Management) presented by Her Excellency Dr. Mona Jaber Ahmed, a faculty member at the College of Science and Human Pedals in Ghat, followed by the second workshop Which was presented by Her Excellency Dr. Dalal Abdel Aal, a faculty member at the College of Business Administration, entitled Entrepreneurial Behavior (Entrepreneurship and Creativity Skills), and finally concluded the workshops specialized in developing and refining entrepreneurial skills with a workshop entitled: Entrepreneurial Leadership (Reality and Requirements) presented by Ms. Jawaher bint Muhammad Al-Zoman, a faculty member at the College of Business Administration, and all workshops dealt with the importance of entrepreneurial leadership and the role of women in making change and creativity within the Kingdom's Vision 2030.

In conclusion, the Vice President for Female Student Affairs expressed her thanks and appreciation for the support and sponsorship of the President of the University and everything that would develop and refine women's skills and their strategic leadership role at Majmaah University.

A group of academics and specialists from the university participated in the research supervision of talented students participating in the National Olympiad for Scientific Creativity "Ibdaa" for the year 2022, which is organized by the Ministry of Education and the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity "Mawhiba", in application of the education policy in the Kingdom to encourage and develop the spirit of research and scientific thinking, as the Olympiad comes in an effort to create a competitive creative scientific environment that stimulates the mind of the scientific researcher, and prepares it for competition and entry into the global knowledge system based on innovation and scientific research. To achieve sustainable national development.

The Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center at the university held a number of meetings and meetings, in order to introduce the National Olympiad for Scientific Creativity and follow up on developments and developments in students' projects, where a group of faculty members in different disciplines participated from the university, namely: Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Mutairi from the College of Engineering, and Dr. Fadia Al-Mutairi from the College of Computer Science and Information Technology, and Dr. Hoda Hakim from the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Amani Hassan from the Faculty of Science, Dr. Warda Al-Hokail from the College of Education, Mr. Hajar Al-Mujahid from the College of Science, and Ms. Ashwaq Al-Mutairi from the College of Education.

It is worth mentioning that the National Olympiad for Scientific Creativity is an annual scientific competition targeting middle or high school students, which is based on competition in one of the scientific fields, by submitting individual scientific projects in accordance with the required special standards and controls, and the projects are governed according to specific scientific criteria in order to identify distinguished projects to be nominated for the highest competitive stages.

This participation comes with the support of His Excellency the President of the University, Prof. Saleh bin Abdullah Al-Mizil, and the follow-up of the Vice President for Female Student Affairs, Dr. Jawaher bint Abdulrahman Al-Omar, to enhance the research and innovation system and pay attention to achievements in the various fields of science and knowledge.

Under the patronage of His Excellency the President of the University, Prof. Saleh bin Abdullah Al-Mizil, the University, represented by the Deanship of Quality and Skills Development, held an honoring ceremony for the winners of the President's Award for Quality and Excellence in its tenth session 1442 AH - 1443 AH, which is held by the Deanship on an annual basis, and under the supervision of the University Agency for Educational Affairs, and the ceremony was attended by university vice-rectors, deans of colleges and supporting deanships, directors of departments, and participants in the award from its various categories.

The ceremony began with a speech from the Acting Dean of Quality and Skills Development, Dr. Riyadh Al-Mishrafi, in which he reviewed the most prominent achievements of the Deanship for this year 1443 AH, as well as the criteria and procedures of the award, and indicated in his speech that the number of programs that have obtained accreditation is eight programs within the programs offered by the university, and that the application for 7 other programs has been completed and waiting for the accreditation decision, and work is currently underway on 8 other programs during the next year - God willing - within the framework of The Deanship to prepare programs to obtain academic accreditation, and maintain institutional accreditation, indicating during the presentation that the Deanship carried out the internal audit for this year for 25 programs, 26 departments, and 9 deanships, and the program of visiting the review team from the National Accreditation Center for Advanced Programs was simulated.

He also pointed out in his speech in addition to development and training, and that the Deanship has held many courses and workshops in several fields such as academic accreditation and its requirements, evaluation methods, and skills development for administrators and faculty members.

At the end of the ceremony, the Vice President of the University, Prof. Musallam bin Muhammad Al-Dosari, honored the winners of students, faculty members, employees, academic programs, supporting deanships, departments, and teams working in the award, where they received from His Excellency a certificate of thanks on this occasion.

His Excellency the President of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center, Dr. Abdullah bin Saeed Bajahzar, visited the Riyadh Chamber and was received by His Excellency the Chairman of the Businesswomen Committee at the Riyadh Chamber, Ms. Abeer Al-Hokal, and in the presence of the Chairman of the Committee of Investors from Home at the Riyadh Chamber, Ms. Hind Al-Baiz and Ms. Nouf Al-Jarallah, and the visit comes in response to the desire of the Riyadh Chamber to cooperate with Majmaah University to consolidate the culture of investment, stimulate the initiative, increase efficiency and achieve the goals of university students and students for investment and self-employment. Including spreading the culture of self-employment and investment from home, which serves and supports the investment thought of students and students, which contributes to building a conscious generation and informed cadres that achieve the vision of our Kingdom 2030.
