College Vice Dean Lecture on “End of the Year Self Discipline”

The college vice Dean Dr. Noorah Shaker Alshihri delivered a lecture entitled “Self-discipline at the End of the Year” in the Women’s campus college theater on Wednesday 1/1/1437. The lecture covered a number of themes the first of which was self-discipline. The theme comes right from the Noble Qur’an which says "Read your book. Your self shall be a witness against you this Day." Dr AL Shihri commented that "A year of our lives was over with all the good deeds and mischiefs" adding that "Life is a big opportunity we need to seize to benefit from it in this world and in the hereafter". The lecturer cited Quran which says "And worship your Lord until there comes unto you the certainty (i.e. death)" corroborating then the Quranic verse with the Hadith of the Prophet to Omar whose son narrates that grabbing his father's shoulders the prophet (peace be upon him) said "Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a wayfarer." In this respect, Dr. AL Shihri cited the son of Omar, May Allah be pleased with them, who used to say: “In the evening do not expect [to live until] the morning, and in the morning do not expect [to live until] the evening. Take [advantage of] your health before times of sickness, and [take advantage of] your life before your death.” Cited by by Al-Bukhari. The speaker called then for helping others to enrich the logs of their good deeds by promoting the good, preventing the evil, renewing intentions of the good and turning habits into types of worship. She urged the audience to be serious and zealous, and reminded them of how time flies and why people need therefore to rethink about their relation with Allah, their selves and people around them. Dr. AL Shihri touched after that on the issue that as Muslims we should have some faith plans for the hereafter as well as some developmental projects because Allah values strong believers better than the weak ones. Additionally, she urged the audience to haste in doing the good and in asking Allah for forgiveness as much as they can. She argued that we no longer enjoy the blessings of Allah because we do not promote the good and prevent the evil and said that people's ages will be valued not by the number of years they lived but rather with the good they did and the prayers they made. She clarified that people should take a lesson from the innovations, changes and tribulations taking place around us over the years and called the audience to keep a good relation with their relatives and to do good to their neighbors. The speaker concluded by the fact that people are leaving this life for the other world and that as every year passes we get closer to our fate – death. In fact, Allah says: "The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception (a deceiving thing)." She reminded the audience that they should make good use of the blessings Allah bestowed upon us and stay away from anything that displeases Him as man will be judged in the hereafter. Dr. AL Shihri cited in this regard Moadh Ibn Jabal, may Allah be pleased with him, who narrates the Hadith of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) which says " A Man shall not be able to move on the Day of Resurrection before he answers the following four questions: how did he consumed his youth?, what did he do with his knowledge?, How did he earn and spend his wealth? and how did he wear out his body?"
